Deworming is the cheapest routine care your pet gets and the one most people forget. India's warm, humid climate keeps intestinal parasites active year-round, and several of them pass to humans. Here is the schedule, the signs you are overdue, and why the price makes skipping it pointless.
Most deworming schedules online come from countries with cold winters, where parasite transmission drops for months at a time. India does not have that pause. Warm, humid conditions keep worm eggs viable in soil year-round, and the routes of infection are everywhere: contaminated soil, puddles, fleas, the mother's milk, and contact with other dogs, of which most Indian neighbourhoods have plenty.
That is why Indian vets recommend more frequent deworming than international guidelines, and why a schedule copied from a US site will leave your pet under-protected.
The other reason it matters more here is the people. Roundworm and hookworm pass readily to humans, and children who play on the floor are the most exposed. Deworming the pet is household hygiene, not just pet care.
| Age | Dogs | Cats |
|---|---|---|
| 2 to 12 weeks | Every 2 weeks | Every 2 weeks |
| 3 to 6 months | Monthly | Monthly |
| Adult, outdoor or scavenges | Every 3 months, sometimes monthly | Every 3 months |
| Adult, indoor only | Every 3 months | Every 3 to 6 months |
| Pregnant or nursing | Ask your vet; specific timing matters | Ask your vet |
The intensive early schedule exists because puppies and kittens are often born with roundworm passed from the mother, and can carry a heavy load by a few weeks old. Two-weekly dosing until twelve weeks clears the initial infection and the reinfections that follow.
| Worm | How it spreads | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Roundworm | Mother's milk, contaminated soil | Near universal in puppies and kittens. Passes to humans. |
| Hookworm | Soil, through the skin of the paws | Causes anaemia. Dangerous in small puppies. Passes to humans. |
| Tapeworm | Swallowing fleas, eating raw meat or prey | Rice-grain segments near the tail. Flea control is part of the fix. |
| Whipworm | Contaminated soil | Chronic diarrhoea. Eggs survive in soil for years. |
| Heartworm | Mosquitoes | Not an intestinal worm and not covered by standard dewormers. Needs separate monthly prevention in mosquito-heavy areas. |
Not every dewormer covers every worm. A basic tablet usually handles roundworm and hookworm. Tapeworm needs a product that includes praziquantel. Ask your vet for a broad-spectrum product, or make sure you know what yours covers. Heartworm is a separate conversation entirely and is worth having if you live somewhere with heavy mosquitoes.
A pet showing none of these can still carry worms. The schedule exists precisely because a low-level infection is invisible until it is not.
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Standard dewormer tablet (per dose) | ₹50 to ₹200 |
| Broad-spectrum including tapeworm | ₹150 to ₹400 |
| Monthly heartworm prevention | ₹300 to ₹800 |
| Vet consultation, if included | ₹200 to ₹500 |
An adult dog on a three-monthly schedule costs a few hundred rupees a year to deworm. Treating an established hookworm anaemia costs many times that. There is no version of the maths where skipping it saves money. Our vet cost guide puts this in the context of everything else.
That last point about dates is the practical one. Deworming fails through forgetting, not through anything complicated. A record you can actually find, which is what Pawspert's health timeline is for, solves the only hard part.
Puppies every two weeks from two weeks of age until twelve weeks, then monthly until six months, then every three months for life. Outdoor dogs and dogs that scavenge may need it more often; ask your vet.
Kittens follow the same pattern as puppies: every two weeks until twelve weeks, monthly to six months, then every three months. Strictly indoor adult cats can often stretch to every six months, but every three is the safer default in India.
Yes, most dewormers are oral tablets or syrups you give at home, dosed by weight. Get the right product and dose from a vet the first time, weigh the pet accurately, and keep a note of the date. Puppies and kittens should be dosed under veterinary guidance.
A single dose is typically 50 to 200 rupees for a standard tablet at a pharmacy or clinic, with broad-spectrum products at the higher end. It is among the cheapest things in pet care.
Yes. Roundworm, hookworm and some tapeworms are zoonotic, and children are most at risk because they play on floors and put hands in mouths. Regular deworming of the pet is the main protection for the household.
